A Simple Note on the Touch-Move Rule in Chess

Known as one of the most popular rules in chess, both in the amateur and professional ranks, the touch-move concept compels players to move the very first piece that they touch. Because chess is a game that requires a lot of thinking, it is always best for players to think about their moves before executing them. In this way, they can be sure that what they are always making the right moves at the appropriate moments of the game.

The touch-move rule is applicable to situations where players touch specific chess pieces. If ever they change their minds and want to make a different move instead aside from the initial move that they make, this rule obliges the players to make the initial move as long as the situation allows it. It prohibits players from retracting the moves that they have already made. The proper enforcement of this rule preserves the spirit of fairness and equality between the two players.

Once players touch a specific chess piece, they have to move it no matter what in one way or the other. The touch-move rule prohibits them from touching any other chess piece besides the one, which they initially touched. Simultaneously, this rule also allows players to make a move despite touching a specific chess piece as long as they have not yet left that piece to a different spot. That piece could be moved to any spot as long as the basic chess rules allow it.

Meanwhile, players much capture a specific piece from their opponents whenever they touch them, and when it is possible to capture that piece. If that move is impossible to make, then the touch-move rule will not take effect. On the other hand, the players would have to make a different move instead. The touch-move concept maintains the integrity and beauty of the game of chess.

The touch-move rule also applies to the special move called castling. The players must follow this one especially during chess tournaments where official rules really take effect. The king must be touched initially before the rook. Nonetheless, a castling move must push through if the players touch the rook and king simultaneously, as long as the rules allow it. If a castling move is not possible in this situation, the players must make a different move involving the king instead.

This rule also mandates players not to release a pawn upon reaching the opposite end for promotion. They should take the promoted piece first before releasing the pawn for an upgrade. However, if they do release the pawn before it can be replaced with an upgraded piece, the promotion would not take effect and that particular pawn would end up still as a pawn. Asking permission from the opponent is necessary for players before they could adjust their chess pieces. At the same time, only the players who are about to make their moves can adjust their pieces.
